WALK-AND-TURN TEST

This test involves standing heel to toe and walking a certain number of steps (usually 9) along an imaginary line, then turning and repeating.

The officer will check your ability to follow specific instructions, whether or not you can maintain balance, if you pause or lose count of your steps, among other things.

Alcohol can certainly cause an inability to properly perform this test; however it is not the only cause. Age, injury, emotional or physical ailments ranging from anxiety to back problems can be significant contributing factors in failing the walk-and-turn test.

Simply because the walk-and-turn test is standardized or "approved", does not mean its results will always hold up in a court of law.
